Pyrite glint - snippet 7

It turned out to be a tunic and trouser as well. I put it on and was surprised by how perfectly it fit. They’d probably wirelessly measured us in the undressing room. On the bottom of the box I found a hollow belt with small internal compartments next to a pair of thigh-high boots. I stored the credit stick inside the belt, put the jewellery on and strapped the chronometer back onto my right upper arm below the wide sleeve. The boots were a bit too tight but widened automatically as I took a test stroll around the room.

“You’re travelling really light.” Jickaza commented. He took a lot longer to strap on and store away all his things.

“The damned mancari took everything else.”

Jickaza looked at me sharply. We’d been conversing in common speak. Mancari was a Razzan expletive. I shrugged nonchalantly, dismissing my slip.

“Zac uses it a lot. He explained the meaning to me one drunken night.” Not a lie, but not the whole truth either. Jickaza snickered.

“Jeah, he has a very loose mouth when his wife is not around. She’s pretty uptight.”

“I noticed.” I said drily.

“Ah, don’t worry. Our medics are pretty good. Hey, that looks fantastic on you. There’s a mirror, have a look.”

I let his pathetic diversion tactic pass for the moment and turned. Jickaza was right, the outfit suited me pretty well. The red was a stark contrast against my pale skin and dark hair. Freshly washed, it fell to about my elbows and felt strangely loose. Something was off about my face. I moved closer to the mirror, staring intently. It was my eyes. In the brightly lit dressing room the pupils had shrunk to narrow vertical slits. The rest of my eye was a warm green shade with golden sparks radiating outwards from the pupil. They looked completely alien in my face. Well, nothing to be done about it because my contacts were also absent since the decon. My sight was actually better without them and my eye reaction time a lot faster. I'd get new ones on the next space station if the medics here didn't have them. Just as I was about to turn back around, I caught Jickaza staring at my face over my shoulder. He quickly looked away and fiddled with his clothing. Strange, he had not really struck me as a shy type before. I gathered my hair over my left shoulder and braided it absent-mindedly.
