We did not speak for the rest of the trek. Whatever I'd expected, it was not the sleek and shiny shuttle that sat in the glaring sun outside the main entrance of the mine. Zac approached it first and the boarding door unfolded. With a mental shrug I followed him inside. My eyes adjusted abnormally fast to the dimmer interior. Wearing the damn contacts usually made my eyes much slower.
Three Razzan, a woman and two men were waiting inside for us.
"My dear, what did I have to rescue you from this time?" The rather small female Razzan said softly as she approached Zac. Her vividly coloured gown looked expensive and were that diamonds on her teeth? The men, dressed in some sort of sombre uniform, remained silent.
"Someone sung of the gold the miners found. I have one survivor with no clue what happened." Zac's stance had not relaxed.
The survivor understands your language. I said nothing and studied the shuttle interior instead. Someone had spent a lot of credits on this first class babe.
"A crossbreed. Who is she?" The woman mustered me. On a human, her expression would have been called a sneer. As she was Razzan, I wasn't sure. They looked very much like humans but sometimes their behaviour had very di fferent meaning.
"The mineral expert who passes off as human." Zac shook his head. Then he turned his attention back to me and switched to common speak.
"My dear, may I introduce Dr. Jemaina."
"Dr. Jemaina, this is my wife, the Exalted Raitel."
His wife. Interesting. Because I had no idea what her title meant, I bowed like I would for any high ranking dignitary. Her pale blue eyes narrowed a fraction, then she just waved a hand dismissively.
"Let us return to the space shuttle, my husband. This planet indeed is as dreary as I have been told." With that, she turned her complete attention back to Zac.
"Dr. Jemaina, please follow the crew's instruction, we will talk once we are safe in orbit." Zac told me, then placed his wife's hand on his arm and matched her small, high heeled steps.
"Oh my poor husband, why do you always have to leave me alone." The Exalted Raitel said in a plaintive voice as they walked deeper into the shuttle.
"Probably has his reasons," I muttered under my breath.
Zac and his wife spun around. "What?! You unworthy halfbreed lowlife dare insult me like this?" She shouted at me in Razzan, her arms spread wide. Mercury. Their fancy pureblood ears were probably a lot sharper than mine.
"Tahera-den, once we reach the space shuttle." With that she turned and stalked o ff.
"Ilea, you cannot be serious! Think - " Zac began but she ignored him and turned to one of the other Razzan men instead. "My quarters, now." The man inclined his head slightly and followed her out with a slight limp. Zac watched them leave, then rounded on me.
"Congratulations! You just provoked my wife to a duel."
