Pyrite glint - snippet 5

"W-what?" I stammered.

Let's take this somewhere private." His face was grim as he steered me into a small meeting room.

"Listen and learn, Doctor. You insulted her by suggesting she could not hold my interest and that I was possibly unfaithful." He crossed his arms in front of his chest.

"Tahera-den is duel as far as it goes. Though Teraz will let you live once you yield."

"Any rules?" Focus on the essential, girl.

"Two go in to fight, one walks out." It sounded like a ceremonial vow when he said the words in Razzan, then repeated them in common speak.

"Once we reach the ship, you will have access to our armoury. You won't have to face him unprepared."

Him? My face must have shown my confusion. Zac unfurled his arms and looked at me with something akin to pity. "Teraz Sunglimmer, her sworn man. The warrior who left with my wife."

I racked my brain. Maybe a head taller than me, dark hair, broad build, limping. A trained Razzan warrior. Just my luck. I leaned my head back against the spotlessly gleaming wall and shut my eyes. Zac's hand on my shoulder startled me to open them again.

"Our medics will stitch you back together. Then we'll get you to a space station before you can insult anyone else." As a pep talk, he failed miserably.

Suddenly an alarm blared. Time to brace for atmospheric breach. I had not even realised we had left planet ground. We sat down at the small table and secured ourselves with the integrated safety harnesses from the chairs. The transition to open space was incredibly gentle and made me insanely jealous of the owner of the craft.

Below us, Dura grew smaller. A broad brown belt spanned around the planet. The mine system was somewhere down there in a mountain chain. From this height, the polar woods were visible as green tips to the left and right.

"Dura's really beautiful from up here." I said softly, gazing at the panorama. Beside me, I could hear Zac move but he said nothing.

The release alarm chimed. Zac got up and left. I spent the transit to the space ship admiring Dura.

Another alarm sounded. We were about to dock to the space ship. The meeting room faced away from the space ship but it had to be huge. Because I could see a part of it from my window as we got closer and closer. The shuttle just kept going and only when reinforced steel walls appeared left and right I understood. We were not docking at the space ship, but inside. Very fancy.

I watched as the docking gate's ports swept close behind us, shutting off my view of space. Behind me, the door swished open nearly soundlessly and I turned around. It was the other man from our earlier welcome committee.
